5 Reasons that gearmanndude is actually Jack Black

If you haven’t seen gearmandude on YouTube yet, do a search now and listen to his voice. A lot of people suspect that this could actually be Jack Black. He never shows his face, and never denies nor admits whether he is Jack Black.

I decided to do a little investigation of my own to prove whether gearmandude is actually Jack Black. I have come up with 5 reasons that suggest he is the popular actor, Jack Black:

Reason #1 – His Watch

You’ll notice in the photos below, that he is wearing the same watch.

Reason #2 – His Ring

In the two photos below he has the same ring on.

Reason #3 – His Voice

If you listen to his voice in both of the videos below, you’ll notice they are identical. Even the phrasing that he uses is the same.

Jack Black

Gearmandude

Reason #4 – Everyone Is Suspecting The Same Thing

If you do a Google search on “Is gearmandude Jack Black”, you’ll see hundreds of people that are thinking the same thing.

For example, have a read of this forum post asking if gearmandude is Jack Black. Gearmandude even joins the conversation.. very cool!

Reason #5 – The Love Of Guitars

Apparently, Jack Black has been playing guitar for some time now. As he loves his guitar gear and playing his guitars, there is no reason that Jack Black couldn’t be gearmandude.

Is this enough proof that gearmandude is Jack Black? It’s really for you to decide. All I can say is, I love both gearmandude and Jack Black, and it’s kinda fun not knowing for sure if they are the same or not.

Of greater interest however is Gearmandude’s fantastic effects pedal demos of which there are over 600. These excellent shoot-out and review videos are really well done, with fantastic audio quality and cover almost every pedal you can think of, including some rare vintage gear. At the end of the day with cool demos like these… who cares?

If only I could see if he’s holding an odd green pick….

Jul 17, 2010

Whoever he is, those are some wicked snakeskin boots.

Jack Black didn’t start playing guitar until 6 years ago, just before the movie ‘School Of Rock’

Umm, WHAT? He’s been playing guitar with Tenacious D since 1994. They were briefly featured in Bio Dome (1996) had a short lived HBO series (1997) and their first album came out in 2001.

School of Rock came out in 2003. Interesting that he was playing guitar in a band for almost 10 years before he learned how to play. He must be a time traveler.

I’ve updated the post.. Sorry Brad, didn’t realise he has been playing for so long :)

Jul 18, 2010

It’s not jack black. I’ve seen interviews where he said he had to learn electric guitar from scratch for the movie “School of Rock”. Also, Gearmandude has talked about how he’s taken 2 pedal boards to shows….but jack black never plays electric guitar at tenacious D shows. Mystery Solved.

Jul 18, 2010

Why would Jack Black be doing pedal demos, I doubt its him!

Jul 18, 2010

It’s def him.. No doubt in my mind

Jul 19, 2010

I think it is him, they even share the same reddish marks on their hands it seems (pics from Reason #2). On a side note, $#@! everything about toe socks (boot video).

Jul 19, 2010

The boot video was convincing.

Another reason…

likes to wear rings on both ring fingers

After listening to germandude for awhile, I’m led to believe he is NOT Jack Black. They have similar vocal qualities, but they’re not the same.

Jul 19, 2010

I dunno man, show me a photo of Jack Black wearing cow boy boots and I will believe it.

but he’s a germandude

Your CommentsIt is not only the voice. some trademark phrases come across repeatedly…
“toadally aawwsome”.
why should he not do these reviews? everybody needs money. actors without assignment don’t earn anything. when has he last been seen in a movie? and he seems to be very much leaning towards EH products. are there any reviews of him of other brands?

Sep 4, 2010

How about his handle of the camera? He’s really good shoting, that’s another clue of someone who uses them often

So true..

Hate to burst everybody’s bubble but gearmanndude is actually Eric Whorton of the Louisville, KY band El Roostars. Google him and you’ll see for yourself. He even use the initials GMD in his bio and calls himself “The Sack”. He’s a notorious pedal freak that loves collecting and trying them out. Also note the El Roostars poster in the gearmanndude den tour video on Youtube.

thanks, wally. you just ruined the dream.

100% Jack. Of course it’s him. Nobody works for free. He’d pumping a band or a site or something. Only way he wouldn’t was if he had a bunch of cash and did it for the love of guitars. It’s Jack and god bless him for creating these great resources for us.

Dec 9, 2010

Unfortunately Gearmandude isn’t Jack Black he is Eric Whorton from band “El Roostars”

The case is closed on this one.

I can give you 5 reasons why the author has no clue what he is talking about:

1. You can’t see what kind of watch he is wearing. Do you see the brand name? No! It may look similar, but it is not clearly identical. It looks different.

2. The ring is very common. Even I own one of those.

3.The voice is similar, but not identical. You can’t prove it is identical.

4. Just because everybody suspects the same thing does not make it true. That is an example of poor inductive reasoning. If everyone believed in the Loch Ness Monster, I suppose you would too, by your logic.

5. I love guitars and effects and own several, but this does not make me gearmandude.

@sior He’s using a green Fender pick in this vid. Not sure if it’s what you’re looking for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdJ_A8xZ8TE

Apr 10, 2011

I’m still trying to figure out who Bucket Head is!!!!

Apr 12, 2011

Well the main thing (this should be number one in this list):

The website! gearmanndude.com…
If you do a whois search you actually see the name of the person who registered:

Eric Whorton

When you register a website, you have to send a copy of your ID or passport, so.. That kinda ruins the dream.

Apr 13, 2011

see this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gelDeT5MlTs&feature=related

Eric Whorton is GMD.

Jul 3, 2011

He’s not Jack Black. I saw him interviewed on a NAMM video. He looks nothing like Jack Black.

Jul 5, 2011

gearmanndude – his name is Eric Whorton (Louisville, KY).

Jul 26, 2011

I seem to think it’s jack black if you watch the Christmas vid right after he puts on the Jedi cape he shows you his new watch which look just like the watch he wears in google pic all the time lol

Any way I bought the luither drive and it was made by jack black O yeah!

Aug 31, 2011

FAIL!!!
Gearman Dude is Eric Whorton. He plays in a band calls El Roostars in Louisville, Kentucky.

Sep 29, 2011

And the number one reason should have been, Who else could afford to buy all the crap he owns?

Oct 1, 2011

those watches are not the same.
